Dünyanın en uzun isimli memleketi If you are fit enough to say this, the world’s longest place name with its 85 letters and walk to the hilltop which takes the name, you will discover spectacular views, a feeling of being in a special, spiritual place and learn a little of New Zealand’s cultural history. The Taumata walk is near Porangahau, Central Hawke’s Bay. Maori chief, Tamatea, composed this lament to name the prominent hill as a tribute to his brother, who was killed in battle there. Hundreds of years later, the 250-hectare farm is still owned by Tamatea’s descendants, the Scott family. Ross Scott says they want to share this special place and have others recognise its place in New Zealand history. Rock pou (sculptures) and additional signage are to be developed on the hilltop. The local tribe, Ngati Kere, is keen to see the exposure and tourism potential carefully managed. Views from the hilltop look over the unspoilt coastline with its magnificent swimming and fishing spots to the Mangamarie range, Teawaputahi mountain and areas of native bush. Tui, Bellbird and other native birds serenade you on the walk to the top of the 252 metre high hill; at the top is Tamatea Pokai Whenua’s landmark. This is not a sophisticated tourist spot but creates take-home memories that cannot be copied. Adamın görünce Ohaaa! felan diyesi geliyor ama denmiyor işte. Okunması bile zor olan bu yerde her şeyin ismi uzunmuş. Adamlar alışmışlar ceremesini de çeken onlar ama isim yüzünden popülerliklerindende memnunlardır eminim. Yakın olsa gidip şu tabelanın altında bir fotoğrafta ben çektirirdim. (Acaba posta adreslerini zarfa nasıl sığdırıyorlardır? Merak ettim doğrsusu.)
